The Byzantine lineage of Komnenoi came to the historical foreground under Basil II (976-1025), and they probably didn't have any old ancestry as some other Byzantine families did. Their gradual rise unfolded during the 11th century. Alexios I Komnenos, who belonged to the third generation of this family, was crowned emperor in 1081 and founded the dynasty that ruled the Empire for a century, until 1185. Although Alexios’ uncle Isaac I Komnenos was emperor from 1057 until 1059, his reign was merely an incident of no consequence. To the further rise of the Komnenos family contributed mainly Anna Dalassene, the widow of John Komnenos and mother of Alexios I. The evaluation of the Komnenian dynasty by modern Byzantine scholars waves between intense doubt and extreme exaggerations. |
