The main argument of the promoters of the thesis about the identity between the Bulgarians (Proto-Bulgarians) and the Koutrigurs and Outigours is the supposition that all of them inhabited the same territory in the 6th c. According to the Byzantine chroniclers, the Bulgarians lived in the plains to the west and east of Dnieper down to Crimea, while the Koutrigurs were located immediately to the west of Don, along the northwestern coast of the Azov Sea. |
