The state of the Paulicians was founded in the late 810s by Sergios-Tychikos, spiritual leader of the Paulician religious community. It was located on the borderland between the Byzantine Empire and the autonomous Arab state of Melitene. The conflict between the Byzantines and the Paulicians led to the destruction of the Paulician state in 878, following the capture and the sack of its capital, Tephrike, by the Byzantine army. |
