ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
City in western Phrygia, on the banks of the Pencalas river, near modern Çavdarhisar. It was Hellenized around the 3rd c. BC, while in the beginning of the 2nd c. BC it was the matter of dispute between the kings of Pergamon and Bithynia. In 133 BC it came under Roman control. Aezani enjoyed great prosperity during the Imperial Period, especially during emperor Hadrian’s reign. During that period, the monumental temple of Zeus was founded and the city became member of the Panhellenion. The city featured brilliant buildings, of which the architectural complex of the theatre-stadium, the streets with colonnades and the thermae complex stand out. The cult of the goddess of Phrygia Meter Steunene, who was worshipped in the Steunos cave, near the ancient city, was very important during the Roman period. |
