ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
From around 213 BC onwards, there was a civil war in Parthia between king Vologases VI and his brother, Artabanus IV. Taking advantage of the situation and trying to imitate Alexander the Great, emperor Caracalla campaigned against Parthia and Armenia. At the beginning of the autumn of 214 BC, he arrived in Asia Minor and visited various cities. Choosing a rather slow pace, he arrived in Antioch in the summer of the following year. After Vologases’ respond to Caracalla’s trivial request, the war against Vologases was postponed, whereas Caracalla’s parallel operations in Armenia were a complete disaster. In 216 BC, when Artabanus won the battle for the throne, Caracalla invaded Parthia under the pretext of the king’s refusal to give him his daughter as a bride. The roman invasion was not met with strong opposition and was of relatively small extent. The emperor was planning a second invasion when he was murdered by members of his retinue in April 217 BC. |
