ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
Greek theater at Magnesia ad Maeandrum (Aineh Bazar), in the province of Asia (in the geographical region of Caria) in the western part of Turkey. It is built on the slope of a hill not far from the Agora, on the west side of town and it faces north-west. Its construction is dated to the Hellenistic period (2nd century B.C.). The theater was rebuilt during the imperial era ( 1st century A.D.) and in late period when it was turned into an arena for amphitheatrical games, (or a kolymbethra, for staged sea battles). A significant number of inscribed bases of Greek and Roman citizens’ honorary statues are preserved. |
